$1m of Chopard jewels lifted from Cannes hotel

Chopard jewellery said to be worth US$1 million (£650,000) has been stolen from a French hotel in Cannes, according to local police.

The jewellery was taken from a safe in a Chopard employee’s Novotel hotel room yesterday. It is understood that the jewellery was to be loaned to celebrities appearing at the annual Cannes Film Festival, which opened on May 16.

According to France24, police said the safe containing the jewels was pulled off the wall, and the thief or thieves carried it away.

A spokesperson for Chopard in London told Professional Jeweller that the brand was declining to comment with regards to the theft. Chopard is an official sponsor of the festival.
