Some commercial policies will cover loss of trade as well as damage

Insurers are likely to pay out in excess of £200 million in claims to businesses and retailers directly impacted by the UK riots, it has emerged.

The size of the figure is an indication of just how much damage has been done to the high street, where shops have been looted, damaged and set on fire.

Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the Association of British Insurance said: “We have every sympathy for residents and business owners who have suffered damage to their properties. This is a time of enormous stress for them and their insurers will be on hand to answer any questions that they may have.”
