The Goldsmiths’ Company’s business course celebrates its 30th year

The Goldsmiths’ Company has announced applications are open for the 30th Anniversary of its industry course Getting Started 2011.

Over the past 30 years this week-long introduction to business has helped launch many careers within the industry. A highly popular course, it is offered annually to recent graduates of jewellery, silversmithing and allied trades as part of the Company’s support for the Craft and Industry.

The course, which can accommodate 30 delegates, is designed to provide an introduction to the industry and the career opportunities on offer. Whether the individuals are planning to work for a company or to establish themselves as a self-employed designer-maker the course is equally relevant.

Held over five days, the varied and interesting programme includes a comprehensive series of talks by prominent and experienced speakers from within the industry, covering topics ranging from jewellery trends to the practicalities of setting up a business and selling one’s own work. Examples of the themes covered are:

Jos Skeates – Director of ECOne gallery, London – Life as maker and retailer.
Elizabeth Oliver – Design director at Annoushka Ltd – Life as a designer.
Ndidi Ekubia – Designer silversmith – Making a living as a silversmith.
Rachel Sweeney – MD Cox & Power London – Running a manufacturing and retail business.
Isobel Dennis – Director New Designers, Upper Street Events – Exhibition Planning.
Rebecca and Howard van Rooijen – founders of Benchpeg – Utilising social media.
Dana Robertson and Tom Banks – Creative director and founder of Neon Branding Design Company – What is branding and what does it mean to you?
Martyn Pugh – Award winning gold and silversmith – What is your work really worth?
Vivienne Becker – Jewellery historian and journalist – Our jewellery world.

Lunch is provided each day and there is an additional opportunity to meet other members of the trade at a networking event, at which delegates are able to display examples of their work to discuss with guests.
