9ct gold rockets 40% in Q2 hallmarking figures

18ct gold rises 18.8% with silver up 16.2% in latest Q2 results.

UK hallmarking figures for Q2 2014 reveal a continued upward momentum in 9ct and 18ct gold assaying, with 20.8% overall growth from April to June 2014 compared to the same period in 2013. 

According to date complied by the Birmingham Assay Office for the four UK assay offices, gold continued to show strength with a 30.9% boost in 9ct gold hallmarking, followed by a 18.8% growth in 18ct gold items. In addition,14ct gold rocketed 44.6% compared to Q2 2013.

Sterling silver registered more moderate gains of 16.2% for 925 purity, while 950 platinum registered a 3.5% uplift in the number of items hallmarked.

Palladium 950 suffered a minimal hit in Q2 with items declining 0.2%, but was supported by 87.3% growth in palladium 500.

A statement from the Birmingham Assay Office said: "The figures for Q2 of 2014 show an overall increase in articles hallmarked of 20%, this follows a strong [first quarter] when the UK Assay Offices handled an increase of 23.1%. The uplift we have seen in the first half of 2014 is a promising sign for the remainder of 2014."
