9ct gold shines as Q1 hallmarking climbs 23%

Silver assaying also grows in first quarter, while palladium dips 10%.

Hallmarking figures for the first three months of 2014 have revealed an uplift of 23% compared to Q1 2013, with 9ct gold and sterling silver the strongest performing precious metals.

The Birmingham Assay Office (BAO), which compiles the monthly and quarterly UK hallmarking figures, said the number of articles assayed showed a positive start to the year. In all, 9ct gold hallmarking grew 31.5% in first three months of year, while sterling silver hallmarkig was up 21%. Platinum hallmarking remained flat in Q1 against the same period last year, and palladium assaying fell 10%.

The BAO also outlined the monthly hallmarking figures for the UK’s four assay offices for March, with total hallmarked articles up 21.3% compared to March 2013.

18ct gold hallmarking climbed 9.6% while 9ct increased 30.4%. Total silver hallmarking was up 11.6%, with notable climbs in Britannia and 800 parts silver assaying.

Palladium hallmarking fell 8.4% last month compared to March 2013, and platinum grew 2.1% to a total of 20,965 items.
