Memorandum of understanding to improve practices among smaller miners.
The Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) and the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) have announced a collaboration in which they will work together to achieve better practices among artisanal and small-scale mining projects.
The two organizations have agreed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to work cooperatively on their shared objectives, including social, environmental and labour practices in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM).
The ARM and RJC will also facilitate collaborations between large-scale mining operations and small-scale mines to ensure sustainable and fair local opportunities for communities in mineral rich regions. They will also act to increase market access for the jewellery materials produced by smaller mining communities.
The ARM and RJC will collaborate on three key areas. Firstly there will be cross-recognition of standard to ensure their respective certification systems are mutually supportive.
Secondly they will work together on supporting artisanal and small-scale miners, collaborating on the development of projects to improve social, environmental and labour practices, good governance and the implementation of environmental practices in artisanal and small-scale mining. This will involve ARM and RJC working to recruit private, governmental and intergovernmental sponsors.
Finally, the two organisations will focus on industry outreach to increase market awareness and support for jewellery raw materials sourced from well-managed artisanal and small-scale mining operations.
Lina Villa, ARM’s acting executive director said: “ARM believes that strengthening its relationship with the RJC is a key step in building strong collaboration with the industry to jointly embrace the developmental opportunities of ASM.
“We hope to see more and more ASM communities realize their potential of becoming profitable, socially and environmentally responsible enterprises that participate in global markets and contribute to local development.”
Michael Rae, the RJC’s chief executive has also expressed the benefits that the collaboration will bring and says he is looking forward to seeing what the two organisations can bring to small-scale mining communities and the industry as a whole.
”RJC welcomes this new formal relationship between our organisations with great enthusiasm.
“Working together with ARM towards common goals will strengthen our collective efforts towards responsible business practices throughout the jewellery supply chain.”
The Alliance for Responsible Mining has a mission to set standards for responsible ASM and to support and enable producers to deliver Fairmined certified metals and minerals through economically just supply chains to the markets.
ARM’s vision is for small-scale mines to become a formalised, organised and profitable using efficient technologies while being socially and environmentally responsible.
