Alex Monroe is set to open its first retail store by Christmas this year.

The store will be based in London Bridge and will be part of a five-story development the designer is building. The space, which is being built on the site of an existing one-storey shop, will also house a workshop, the business’s head quarters and a roof garden.

Monroe has secured the London site and has been through the pre-planning process with the local council. Work on the building, which the brand estimates will cost just less than £1m to complete, will begin when full planning permission is granted.

The store will be store the brand’s first foray into retail, but it is planning further retail expansion in 2011. Monroe said that he would like to open a store in central London and also open stores in Japan.
