WATCHES OF THE YEAR: Technological Triumphs
  •
  • 1 / 11
HERMES ARCEAU LE TEMPS SUSPENDU: When it comes to adding inventive flair and sheer style to wristpieces, nobody does it quite like the French. Chanel, Dior, Van Cleef and Arpels and Hermes are becoming increasingly adept at marrying elements of their glamorous heritage with precision timing. The result is watches that can stand on their own in technical terms but that also double up as serious style statements. Hermes also adds its famed quirkiness to this already attractive mix, as is displayed in this years Arceau design ? first created in 1978 ? which is designed to allow the wearer to suspend time. In its new form, it features an exotic complication that will appeal to aficionados. The hours and minutes are shown with conventional hands rotating around the dial, but the time can be frozen by a push-button. Press it again when you want to know the time and the hands catch up. The idea is that if you want the good times to last longer and the not-so-good times to speed up, you are in command. Only 174 pieces will be issued in rose gold, with a choice of matte Havana or black alligator straps with a folding safety clasp in rose gold or steel. Steel versions of the time-controlling timepiece, however, are unlimited.
