This is a disappointing outcome. I hope further initiatives are planned. I'm a jeweller and an environmentalist. The two things are not mutually exclusive. My company would never dream of stocking coral jewellery, regardless of where it came from. Its just too difficult to know if its from properly managed sustainable sources or not. I appreciate its a multi-million pound business, but that doesn't justify the damage that may be done to endangered species as a result. Ivory trading has already been regulated and restricted, I don?t see any reason why coral shouldn't be as well. Lets hope there?s more to come on this story and I?m sure Professional Jeweller will be keeping us up to date with developments.

I also think it's very disappointing, I think it's totally unnecessary for jewellers to use coral at all. I'd never buy something like that but I guess there are plenty of people out there who just don't give a damn about anything except looking a bit pretty in the mirror...
