Avi Paz named World Diamond Council president

Eli Izhakoff stands down after 13 years at the helm of council.

Avi Paz has been inaugurated as the new president of the World Diamond Council (WDC), stepping into the shoes of Eli Izhakoff who announced his retirement from the role in Janaury this year.

Paz, the WDC’s vice president, has pledged to continue on the path already established by Izhakoff with a focus on "the campaign to end the trade in conflict diamonds, within the framework of the Kimberley Process".

He took over Izhakoff’s role on July 1 after the former WDC president said he would be retiring from the role after 13 consecutive years in office. Izhakoff said in January this year that the decision to stand down had been made in 2012 and that it was “entirely personal”.

Paz wrote in a statement: "Eli Izhakoff is an industry giant, who not only took our community from a state of crisis to a position of renewed strength, but at the same time instilled within us the understanding that we have the capacity and obligation to create a better life for all of our stakeholders."
