World show becomes first jewellery trade fair to align with the RJC.
World watch and jewellery show Baselworld has become an official sponsor of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), the organisation announced on Thursday.
With the new commitment, Baselworld has become the first jewellery trade fair to align its belief in transparent business endeavour with the RJC’s aim to advance ethical practices throughout the jewellery chain, from mine to retail.
Baselworld incorporates 100,700 trade buyers from 100 countries. This makes it an ideal platform for the RJC’s message of responsible business practice, backed by independent, third party audits.
Baselworld managing director Sylvie Ritter said: “We are keen to assist our exhibitors in this crucial goal of consumer confidence and believe that our support of the Responsible Jewellery Council will achieve this objective. Through the Council we seek to ensure the responsible and ethical advancement of the industry,”
This year the RJC is to work on a chain-of-custody initiative, which through acting as an optional compliment to existing RJC certification, seeks to assist RJC members seeking voluntary certification of chain-of-custody systems. This means they would have to be able to guarantee the identity and integrity of their goods from sourcing to sale.
RJC chief executive Michael Rae said: “Baselworld can greatly contribute to the work the RJC is currently undertaking.”
