Research by Churchill Home Insurance has found that Birmingham is the epicentre of jewellery insurance claims in the UK, with more claims for lost and stolen items than anywhere else in the UK in 2014.
According to a postonline.co.uk, the insurer ranked areas based on highest value claims and volume of claims with Birmingham topping both lists.
The UK area with the second highest value of jewellery claims was Chelmsford, followed by Stockport, Leicester and Manchester.
Other places that made the top ten include Harrow, Edinburgh, Romford, Southend on Sea and Glasgow.
Aside from Birmingham, the highest volume of claims came from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Chelmsford, Guildford, Leicester, Nottingham, Reading, Coventry and Sheffield.
Martin Scott of Churchill Home Insurance said: “There are myriad of factors that result in one area seeing higher or more frequent jewellery claims than others, such as differences in local cultures, crime levels and wealth.”
Data gathered by the insurer shows that one in three jewellery claims are underinsured often by up to three of four times the value the claimant thought the item was worth.
Scott added: “Around 60% of all jewellery claims have no proof of purchase as they were gifts or passed down through inheritance. This is why obtaining a current valuation is paramount.”
