Coloured stones and ‘estate jewellery’ top lots at NY auction.
Bonhams has reported a “stellar” performance in its recent New York auctions, attracting lots from across the world and securing sales of more than $3.5 million (£2.29m).
At an auction on Tuesday that was simultaneously broadcasted to San Francisco and Los Angeles, several jewellery items beads their pre-sale estimates, which Bonham says reflects “the continuing robust strength of the current jewellery market”.
Virginia Salem, New York director of jewellery at Bonhams said: “We were thrilled to host a standing-room only sale that included loyal national and international Bonhams clients, as well as new faces from the private sector.
"Jade, sapphire and diamond lots were star performers and we also witnessed a growing appreciation for unusual signed pieces that resulted in competitive bidding that doubled and even tripled the pre-sale estimates.”
The sale was led by two jade items that beat their high pre-sale estimates by more than four times. A jadeite jade and diamond necklace of 38 round jade beads and brilliant-cut diamonds topped the sale by claiming $188,500 (£119,564), despite having a pre-sale estimate of $35,000 to 45,000 (£22,000 to £28,000).
A second jadeite jade and diamond ring was sold for $86,500 (£54,870), smashing pre-sale estimates of $12,000 (£7,611).
A 7.29ct diamond ring belonging to Ila Franco, a Brazilian animal activist and founder of AILA (International Alliance of the Animals), sold for $122,500 (£77,684).
Two sapphire lots took places among the top ten of the sale, including an 18.34ct sapphire and diamond ring and a 21.75ct oval-shaped sapphire and diamond ring.
Period jewellery also attracted attention at the sale, with two invisibly-set Van Cleef & Arpels ruby rings selling for almost £70,000 (£44,367).
Bonhams next US jewellery auction is on December 13. Susan Abeles, head of jewellery US at Bonhams said: “In this sale we noticed that coloured stones, high quality diamonds and estate jewellery performed commendably well.
“This makes our department even more excited for our December 13th auction since several pieces of estate jewellery highlight that sale as well. We look forward to having continued success at our December auction.”
