The Houlden Group and Jewellery & Watch Birmingham have revealed the winners of the first annual Houlden bridal competition, with Fei Liu and Siobhan Maher taking home awards for their diamond engagement ring designs.

This is the first year the competition has taken place, with the winners’ and finalists’ work now set to be showcased during Houlden’s buying group meetings and at various Houlden retailer members’ shops throughout the UK.

The competition was split into two categories – £1,500 to £3,000 and £3,000 to £5,000 – with five finalists.

Fei Liu took home the prize in the £1,500 to £3,000 category for his Aurora ring, a yellow gold and chocolate diamond design with pavé-set shoulders and a sweeping, knot-like setting.

Maher, who works in-house at Domino, won the award for the £3,000 to £5,000 category with her Treasured Moment rings, a platinum ring with a .50ct round-brilliant diamond and 0.08ct of pave diamond detail on the engagement ring. The design also has a matching wedding band set with 0.04ct of diamonds.

Houlden Group chief executive Stuart Laing presented the awards. He praised the all of the finalists and winners for their innovative commercial designs at commercial prices, and that he believes the winners’ pieces will be a commercial success.

Maher said of her winning design: “All couples have special moments in their relationship. The first date, the first kiss, the special holiday, and this is what the little diamond details on these rings are designed to represent. I think it’s a truly romantic idea that each couple can use these jewels as tangible mementoes of the minutia that build a relationship."
