To mark the 50th anniversary of the Accutron watch Bulova is launching a limited-edition hand-crafted replica of the original Accutron Spaceview 214.

The limited-edition watch was first unveiled at BaselWorld 2010 but will be launched in the UK and around the world this month.

Bulova UK general manager Gordon Dickens said: “50 years ago our Accutron technology set a new standard of precision and accuracy which established its place in timekeeping history. 50 years later we are honouring and celebrating that legacy with a stunning handmade replica of the original Spaceview design. We are confident watch enthusiasts will appreciate the design and value captured in this very special anniversary timepiece.”

When the original Accutron first launched on October 25, 1960 it was thought to be the most accurate timing mechanism available and Bulova claims that it was “the first personal timekeeping advancement in 300 years”.

Bulova says the Accultron was the world’s first electronic watch without springs or an escapement. It was operated by an electronically activated tuning fork and instead of ticking, it hummed.
