Jeweller to join annual travelling tour at Houlden retailers.
Charmian Beaton Design was named the winner of the annual Houlden Designer of Excellence, which was presented at The Jewellery Show in Birmingham this week.
Judges praised Charmian Beaton Design for its Mariposa jewellery collection, describing it as “technically strong with a lovely flow”.
Charmian Beaton Design, which has a shop and workshop in Maidstone, Kent, spoke of her delight at winning and said she intends to use the experience to learn as much as she can.
Arabel Lebrusan was named the runner-up, with judges picking out her recycled silver collections as having excellent craftsmanship and strong commerciality.
Charmian Beaton Design and Arabel Lebrusan will join other designers selected from the Design Gallery at The Jewellery Show for the Houlden Designer of Excellence showcase, which will travel round Houlden members’ stores.
The judging for the competition took place at the exhibition on Monday with Houlden members Ashley Pugh of W Bruford, Karen Bailey of Terence Lett and Mike Rice of Hugh Rice joining with Judy Deuchar of consultancy The Clifton Studio forming the panel. The judges scoured the Design Gallery at the show to pick out new design talent.
The judges picked Beaton and Lebrusan out of a shortlist that included Alex Monroe, Alexis Dove Jewellery, Anja K Design, Babette Wasserman London, Button & Co, Catherine Budd Jewellery, Erica Sharpe Fine Jewellery, Laura Gravestock Jewellery Design, Rachel Galley Jewellery Design and Zelia Horsley Jewellery
Houlden Group chief executive Stuart Laing said: “The Jewellery Show is a great platform for meeting and supporting some of the best innovative jewellery designers and I believe the award offers something the next generation of designers can really aspire to. The Designs of Excellence Collection has generated huge interest and it is really exciting to see the latest trends transformed into wonderful pieces of jewellery.”
