Natural pearl necklace tops auction as pearl demand stays strong.

More than £8 million was grossed in sales of jewellery at London auction house Christie’s yesterday.

Keith Penton, head of the Jewellery Department, Christie’s London, said in a statement this morning: “Concluding the international jewellery sale season, the London auction saw strong results for signed and period jewels, diamonds and coloured gems.

“The property of an Italian private collector and the traditional Cartier section both exceeded their pre-sale expectations.”

The top lot, a natural pearl necklace, sold for £589,250. “The strength of the market for natural pearls continues,” Penton said of the sale.

An Art Deco bracelet by Van Cleef & Arpels was one of several pieces that sparked fierce competition, fetching £289,250 against an estimate of £30,000 to £50,000.
