Organisers have hailed the success of this year’s exhibition, which closed yesterday, despite a dip of 3% to the number of registered buyers attending.
The event saw 1,500 brands unveil and showcase their innovations and creations to a total of 150,000 attendees.
“Baselworld is universally acknowledged as the premier event for the global watch and jewellery industry. What makes it exceptional is that Baselworld is the only show that fully reflects the excellence of the industry by uniting everyone from the smallest to the largest brands representing every sector; and it offers each of these a prestigious platform to present themselves in the best light,” said Baselworld president François Thiébaud
Press attendance increased by 7.5% to 4300 members from over 70 countries.
Professional Jeweller and WatchPro were the only UK business publications distributing thousands of copies from the official media centre. “The reaction to our massive Baselworld edition of Professional Jeweller exceeded our expectations,” said Andrew Martyniuk, group commercial manager for the magazine. “Professional Jeweller is recognised around the world for its support of British jewellery brands and retailers, which is why we invest so much in making sure that we have the strongest possible representation at the world’s greatest trade show.”
Major brands agreed that there was this year’s show was among the most successful in recent years.
Thierry Stern, president of Patek Philippe, said: “This year’s show was an excellent edition that was really successful in terms of numbers and the interest in our products from retailers and the press.”
Jean-Claude Biver, LVMH Group president, agreed. “The results are excellent and we are above all our expectations,” he stated.
Jewellery and gemstone exhibitors were equally happy. The reaction of first time Baselworld exhibitor, Shanghai Kimberlite Diamond Co. was typical. “We can honestly say this is the one and only show that offers us so many unique opportunities,” said the company’s chairman Dong Liusheng.
