Technically astute watch proves brand is capable of function and flair

Legendary diamond house Graff has created its first diver’s watch as part of its new range of watches for 2011 and has asked Professionaljeweller.com to be the first in the media to unveil the new design ahead of its debut in Basel this week.

The ScubaGraff, a men’s diving watch, incorporates the mechanical self-winding Graff Calibre 2 movement – the diamond house’s own exclusive movement – and has a 50-hour power reserve. The watch is water resistant to 300m and has been specially designed for diving with a decompression valve on the case side and a clearly visible 30-minute countdown in the style of a driving gauge to help divers monitor oxygen levels.

As well as being technically astute the divers’ watch has also employed typical Graff attention to design details. The rubber strap has been overlayed with a thinner genuine crocodile skin trap so that wearers can have the look of crocodile, but the durability of rubber.

The back of some of the models have been fire enamelled and all editions feature a hand carved octopus motif on the back of the case, a theme that is continued on the watch’s elaborate folding clasp.

The ScubaGraff is just one of a number of new watches that Graff is introducing to its range in 2011. Read on for a breakdown of Graff’s other new watch launches for 2011.

BabyGraff
Only the finest gemstones have been selected to create the new colourful additions to Graff’s BabyGraff range. Each gem has been precisely cut and set by skilled Graff craftsmen to ensure a perfect and invisible fit. These new additions showcase elegant compositions of the finest Graff diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires in a variety of cuts such as trapeze, trilliant, triangle, brilliant, baguette and princess. Ultra feminine and delicate, these new styles display the signature hallmarks of Graff including a facetted 21mm case inspired by a brilliant-cut diamond. The dial is fully pavéd with trapeze-cut diamonds, and features a triangle-cut gemstone at 12 o’clock. The watches are available with a gem stone-set bracelet or with a choice of stingray or lizard strap matching the gemstone dial theme.

BabyGraff One Carat Diamond Watch
This watch is distinguished first and foremost by its single-row bracelet composed of 27 single-carat brilliant-cut diamonds. These carefully selected gemstones are meticulously set in the company’s London-based workshops, and each comes with its very own certificate from the Gemological Institute of America guaranteeing its quality. The centrepiece of this creation, the watch itself, is made and fitted in Switzerland, the homeland of fine watchmaking. The dial is adorned with 99 fancy-shape diamonds, thereby bearing further eloquent testimony to the precision and finesse of Graff’s gemsetting expertise, and bringing the number of sparkling diamonds on this dainty timepiece to 126, totalling 33 carats.

Graff Diamond Swan
Crafted in the classic tradition of secret watches, which alternately conceal and reveal time, this model is a true jewellery watch. The swan gracefully rests on a diamond bracelet composed of 832 white diamonds, designed to look like the undulating waves on a lake. The swan itself is pavéd with diamonds and its wing is set with marquise-cut diamonds, which slides gently to reveal the dainty timepiece within. The Graff Diamond Swan watch is a unique and whimsical piece set with more than 900 sparkling diamonds totalling 54.7 carats.

MasterGraff Chrono Tourbillon
The MasterGraff Chrono Tourbillon is equipped with a push button situated at 2 o’clock which serves to start, stop and reset the chronograph and its short-time measurements. The easily readable hour and minute counters are symmetrically arranged between 10 and 11 and 1 and 2 o’clock respectively. In this attractive and functional model, the chronograph is driven by the tourbillon; a complication creating a captivating visual effect encircled by the small seconds disks. These sophisticated complications, along with the hour and minute hands, are engaged by a hand-wound movement with an 80-hour power reserve. They are housed within a 47mm case in rose or white gold and sport the Graff signature facetted design echoed by the diamond-tipped crown and triangle-cut gemstone at 12 o’clock. The MasterGraff Chrono Tourbillon is presented on a black or brown crocodile strap with an exclusive Graff folding clasp and is available in a limited edition of 30 pieces in rose and white gold.

MasterGraff Minute Repeater Tourbillon
The MasterGraff Minute Repeater is triggered on demand by an upward push on a dedicated repeater slide positioned on the side of the case. Two hammers striking two gongs sound the hours, quarter hours and minutes on low – high tones. In addition to the hand-wound movement with an 80-hour power reserve, this masculine dress watch features a flying tourbillon revealed through a dial opening at 6 o’clock encircled by a small seconds disc. The black or white lacquered dial with rose gold indicators and triangular-cut gemstone set at 12 o’clock is complemented by the characteristic diamond-tipped crown and facetted 47mm case inspired by a single brilliant-cut diamond. Secured to the wrist by a black or brown crocodile leather strap, this model is issued in two strictly limited 30-piece editions in rose or white gold.

MasterGraff Skeleton Limited Edition
For the very first time, Graff has created a skeletonised tourbillon watch. This model is highlighted by the delicate openworking performed by skilled engravers who pare the metal down to functional essentials, while simultaneously creating a fascinating aesthetic effect. The hand-wound movement with 72 hour power reserve and tourbillon is housed within a 48mm facetted case that is the ultimate expression of Graff diamonds expertise. Comprising 164 diamonds, totalling over 21 carats, the technical expertise involved in such a construction is astonishing since the movement can only be cased once all the diamonds are in place, and no adjustments can be made thereafter – to avoid any risk of damaging the diamonds. The perfect transparency created by the absence of a dial, along with the diamond case enclosed by sapphire crystals ensures panoramic views of the subtle inner workings of the watch. Even winding becomes a show in its own right, since the effect of this operation on the barrels can be viewed in every subtle detail through the case-back. The MasterGraff Skeleton Limited Edition is issued in two limited series of just 10 each in rose or white gold – both fitted with a black alligator leather strap secured by an exclusive Graff folding clasp.

The GraffStar Ladies 38mm
Graff has updated its GraffStar Ladies collection by issuing a new case size of 38mm. Featuring the signature Graff design of a facetted bezel reminiscent of the cut of a brilliant diamond, this variation on the classic GraffStar is distinguished by numerals and hour-markers accented by 43 brilliant cut-diamonds set against a mother of pearl face available in white, pink or blue. The leather strap is available in a choice of colours matching the dial and is fastened by a buckle set with 12 diamonds. A diamond tipped crown and facetted transparent sapphire crystal case complete the watch. This elegantly feminine new style is also available with a bezel featuring a unique mosaic of 113 trilliant cut diamonds and 11 baguette emeralds carefully set by Graff’s master craftsmen in such a way that the stones perfectly reflect the facets of the bezel in a diamond form.
