Owner’s ill health leads to re-focus at London retailer.

Independent London retailer EC One has closed its store in Notting Hill after more than 13 years in the area.

EC One operated jewellery stores in two locations in London – Notting Hill and Clerkenwell – run by owners and twice Professional Jeweller Retail Stars, Jos and Alison Skeates.

The decision was made to close the Notting Hill location last weekend. The news comes after a challenging year for many jewellery retailers, while Alison Skeates’ ill health has caused her to step back from the business, leading to a re-focus of its priorities and direction.

Jos Skeates said: “We have had many happy years in Notting Hill but sadly due to Alison’s illness and increasing economic pressure we felt it was time to simplify the business as much as possible. We will continue to showcase our amazing collection of designers in the Clerkenwell store as well as our revamped website. As someone said to me recently Ali’s health is all that matters –the rest is detail."

EC One opened its first and remaining store in Clerkenwell in 1997, where its team of goldsmiths also work producing bespoke and house collections. Its Notting Hill store on Westbourne Grove opened in 1999, before moving to a larger premises on Ledbury Road housing both a retail store and its buying, online retail and marketing team.
