Savvy jewellers tipped to use green stones in collections.

Colour specialist Pantone has announced PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald as its colour of the year 2013, stating that emerald green will be a global trend in design of all types.

Pantone said the colour would easily translate into fashion and interior design in 2013, news that will be welcomed by the jewellery industry, encouraging designers and retailers to add emeralds or darker green gems to their collection, or to use the colour in other ways such as packaging, birthstone promotions or in costume jewellery lines.

Pantone said that the hue’s association with brilliant, precious gemstones means that the perception of emerald is sophisticated and luxurious.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said: “[Green is] the most abundant hue in nature, the human eye sees more green than any other colour in the spectrum.

“As it has throughout history, multifaceted emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world. This powerful and universally-appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors.”

Emerald green is said to be the colour of growth, renewal and prosperity. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity.

Each year when choosing its colour of the year, Pantone combs the world looking for colour influences. Its focus covers the entertainment industry and films that are in production, travelling art collections, new artists, popular travel destinations and other socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from technology, availability of new textures and effects that impact colour, and even upcoming sports events that capture worldwide attention.
