Fei Liu talks at Birmingham’s Design Space

Designer meets young designers starting their own businesses.

Fine jewellery designer Fei Liu met with young designers last week at Birmingham’s Design Space, an incubation scheme for young designers.

Liu gave a free workshop on how to get a jewellery business off the ground, and is one of several jewellery designers invited over the years to provide advice and guidance.

He talked the students through how he started his business, focusing on some of the harder lessons he has learnt along the way. The talk was said to be especially relevant for Liu as he is a well-known jewellery designer based in Birmingham.

The Design Space is a part of the Solutions for Business portfolio of publicly funded business support.

It is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Birmingham City Council and gives free incubation space for up to 20 designer-maker jewellers.

The designers share a fully equipped workshop and have office space with internet use and administrative facilities. Placements last up to 12 months and at the end of their time, the jewellers will become self-employed, running their brand new businesses.

The project stimulates the growth of start up jewellery design maker businesses in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter, thereby supporting the network of casters, setters, bullion dealers and crafts people that trade and work alongside one another within this unique area of Birmingham.
