GIA prepares for packed day of free seminars

GIA to open its doors for the eighth year to gemstones enthusiasts.

The Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) is preparing to welcome guests to its eighth annual open day, giving gemstone enthusiasts a free glimpse into the world of rubies, diamonds, emeralds and other precious stones.

The event, which will take place on June 13 from 12pm to 6pm, will include gemstone seminars, live interactive demonstrations and advice on how to build a successful career based on knowledge, ethics and professionalism in the gemstone market.

The free-of-charge event will also demonstrate GIA’s eLearning distance education programme.

12:15 – 12:25 p.m.

What is Gemmology?
12:30 – 1:15 p.m.
Gemmology is the practical study of gemstones. This presentation introduces GIA’s curriculum, which is designed to assist jewellers worldwide in the identification, grading, buying, and selling of gemstones and jewellery.

Diamonds – Are They Forever?
1:30 – 2:15 p.m.
Known as the most enduring of gems, the durability of a diamond is defined by three properties. This presentation on the 4Cs of diamonds will introduce these three properties, as well as discuss how diamonds can be treated to alter appearance, the possible effects of treatment, and how to care for diamond jewellery.

The Allure of Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald
2:30 – 3:15 p.m.
Ruby, sapphire, and emerald have fascinated and seduced humankind for thousands of years. By reviewing the history, lore, and inherent characteristics of these magnificent gemstones, this presentation will explore the factors contributing to their adoration and significance in the market.

History and Value Factors of Pearls
3:30 – 4:15 p.m.
Diving into the fascinating and historic world of pearls, this presentation will review pearl formation, the predominant types of pearls found in the market, the seven value factors used by GIA to classify pearls, and provide pearl care and cleaning guidelines.

How to Study with GIA
4:30 – 5:00 p.m.
GIA provides a wide array of gemmological and jewellery-design educational programs. This presentation will outline GIA’s programs of study, the many ways to complete its educational programs, and the locations of GIA campuses worldwide.
