Gold hit hardest as May hallmarking drops 26.1%

Gold assaying falls by almost 112,000 articles, silver down 23.7%.

The latest hallmarking figures for the four UK assay offices show further declines in May, as total figures fell 26.1% compared to May 2012.

The monthly figures, collated and released by the Birmingham Assay Office, show that the total number of items hallmarked in May 2013 was 586,903, falling from 794,107 in May 2012.

Gold hallmarking was said to have been "hit the hardest" last month, with total gold hallmarking down 29.3% to 111,868 articles. The number of 18ct gold items assayed fells to 54,586 items, while 9ct dropped by 29.2% to a total 184,475 articles.

Silver also suffered somewhat, with a decline of 88,366 units, falling 23.7% compared to 2012 figures. Sterling silver dipped 23.2% in May compared to May 2012, with a total of 281,440 articles.

Platinum and palladium were also in decline down 6.5% and 34.9% respectively. Palladium 500 showed declines of 45.4% compared to last year’s figure for May, while platinum 950 dipped during what is typically the UK wedding season.
