Google mobile shake-up to impact e-tail businesses

Google has made significant changes to its search algorithm that could impact e-tail businesses, brands and retailers who currently don’t have a ‘mobile-friendly’ website.

The changes, which were implemented quietly on Tuesday April 21, are targeted at those who don’t currently offer mobile phone and tablet friendly websites.

The update will change the way Google ranks search results, meaning when somebody searches for ‘silver jewellery’, for example, only those sites optimised for mobile use will appear at the top of the list.

These changes reinforce Google’s mobile focus and are designed to help users find results formatted for their devices. The company doesn’t normally advertise its algorithm changes, meaning this one is expected to make a big impact on the online world.
Google estimates that around 50% of searches are conducted from mobile devices, through mobile browsers and its own search apps.
