Hallmarking down 4.4% in October as gold, silver and palladium take hits

Hallmarking figures compiled by Assay Office Birmingham for October 2015 show a decrease in the total number of items assayed compared to the same period in 2014. 

The total number of articles hallmarked across the four UK Assay Offices in October fell by 4.4% compared to the same month in 2014 with a total of 1,186,648 pieces being handled by the Assay Offices compared to 1,240,717 last year.

Gold articles hallmarked were down 3.5%, silver was down 5.5% and palladium down 14.1%. Platinum fared better with a small increase of 2.8%.
