Hallmarking down 7.7% in February

Palladium is only metal to show rise with 550 parts driving growth.

Hallmarking fell 7.7% year on year in February with 591,310 items hallmarked at the four UK assay offices, according to figures compiled by the Birmingham Assay Office.

Following on from January’s figures, palladium continued to deliver a buoyant performance with the total number of items hallmarked up 3%, making it the only precious metal to deliver a year-on-year rise in February.

Gold, silver and platinum all delivered soft performances compared with 2012 figures with the total number of items hallmarked falling 13.7%, 3% and 2.2% respectively.

All purities of gold showed a decline on last year apart from 990 parts, of which three items were hallmarked compared to none in 2012. 999 parts fell 36.4%, 22ct fell 21%, 18ct was down 9.4%, 14ct slipped 39.8% and 9ct was down 13.2%.

There were no year on year increases in any of the silver purities. Fine silver fell 36.5%, Britannia silver was down 58.3%, Sterling silver fell 2.8% and 800 parts silver was level with 2012’s figures with just one item hallmarked.

For platinum the top end suffered with no items of 999 parts platinum hallmarked and 950 parts down 2.2%, while the lower end showed increases with 900 parts up 191.7% and 850 parts doubling with two pieces hallmarked.

Palladium, which had the strongest month of all the metals, showed real strength at the bottom end of the market with 500 parts platinum up 317.9%, rising from 336 items hallmarked in February 2012 to 1,404 last month. 950 parts showed a dip of 11.1% while no items of 999 parts palladium were hallmarked.
