Hallmarking down 9.1% in January 2016 as gold, silver and palladium takes hit

Hallmarking figures compiled by Assay Office Birmingham for January 2016 show a decrease in the total number of items assayed compared to the same period in 2015. 

The total number of articles hallmarked across the four UK Assay Offices in January fell by 9.1% compared to the same month in 2015 with a total of 675,073 pieces being handled by the Assay Offices compared to 742,325 last year.

Gold articles hallmarked were down 9.1%, silver was down 9.0% and palladium down 32.4%. Platinum fared better with a small increase of 3.2%.
