Hallmarking down in July but gold decline slows

Total hallmarking improves on June’s figures with lesser drop of 11.9%

The decline of hallmarking figures slowed in July with a total drop of 11.9% year on year to 789,771 items according to data from all four UK assay offices.

Gold also slowed its descent, registering a drop of 3.6% to 363,429 items, an improvement on last month’s figures. All carats showed a decline with 24ct taking the biggest hit with a drop of 92.2%, followed by 14ct with a drop of 38.1%, 18ct down 16.8%, 22ct down 11.6% and 9ct showing the strongest performance with a drop of 2.9%.

Silver likewise showed an overall decline of 19.8% to 390,933 items but both 800pts silver and Britannia silver showed increases with jumps of 2,816.7% and 62.7% respectively. Sterling silver took the biggest hit with a drop of 20.1% while fine silver slipped 8.6%.

Platinum enjoyed a strong month again with an overall rise of 6.8% to 23,332 items. 900-parts platinum showed the best growth with an uplift of 142.9% while 950 parts rose 6.7%. Both 999 parts and 850 parts were level with 2011’s figures, with just five pieces of 999 hallmarked and two pieces of 850 hallmarked.

Palladium also enjoyed a positive month in hallmarking with levels up 23.4% to 789,771 items. The lower purity of 500 parts showed thye best growth with an uplift of 61% but 950 parts won out in volumes, up 18.9% to 10,400 items versus 500’s 635 items. At the top end of the scale, 999 parts showed an uplift of 100% but was based on a single item being hallmarked compared to no items in July 2011.
