Hallmarking up 13% in Q3 with 2.6m articles marked

Figures also climb in September with 9ct gold still top of the charts.

Hallmarking figures for the four UK as compiled by Birmingham Assay Office have revealed continued growth in Q3 2014, with the number articles marked jumping 13% year-on-year.

For the Q3 period from July to September 2014, gold hallmarking jumped 23.6% compared to the same period in 2013, while silver grew 6.7%. Platinum and palladium both exhibited declines, falling 6.8% and 22% respectively.

In the gold category, 9ct continues to be the fineness of choice, with figures growing 26.8% in the Q3 period, while 18ct grew 13.9% and 22ct climbed 22.8%

The month of September continued the run of positive growth for assaying figures, with total articles up 18.2% against the same month last year.

The strongest performing category was once again 9ct gold with an increase of 38.7% in the number of articles hallmarked.

Sterling silver was up 5.1% and platinum articles up 5.2%. The number of palladium articles was flat against last year.
