Vanilla Ink graduate, IJL Editor’s Choice award winner and jeweller to the stars — Filipa Oliveira is ticking off her business achievements faster than most. But that’s not all, behind her three-year-old brand are many more accolades, from being a finalist in EC One’s young talent contest, Unsigned, to winning the Goldsmiths’ Company’s Award for Jewellery at New Designers.
Her creations kicked off with her Black Preciousness and Golden Honey collections, both paying homage to her Portuguese heritage with intricate filigree re-imagined in a contemporary style. Most recently, Filipa has unveiled her yellow and rose gold-plated Strata collection, dotted with delicate gemstones, contrasted by sky blue agate and jade.
“My greatest business achievement in the past 12 months was to launch my new Strata range at IJL and to consequently win the Editor’s Choice Award for Technical Excellence,” she says. “And of course to be selected for the Hot 100, which is something I always dreamed of since I established my business in 2011.”
While Filipa admits that gaining media exposure and the attention of larger retailers is tough for a burgeoning brand, her pieces have caught the eye of tastemakers, including Black Box Boutique, Brazen Studios and even the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, Portugal.
And then there are those moments that have been personally very special for Filipa. “I was doing a show and a customer wanted to buy one of my jewels and I realised she was a famous Brazilian actress called Graziella Moretto. I was very flattered because I had just finished watching a TV series she was part of.”
Away from the bench in her adoptive home city of Dundee, Filipa admits she is “A proper Portuguese person”, meaning food is an important part of her life. “I like to cook, so most of my time away from the studio is spent gathering with friends having a meal.”
