Jewellery blog founder talks exhibitions and graduate events.
You might have seen Kate Baxter this year, hunting around jewellery trade shows, exhibitions and graduate events with her baby in tow.
Never one to sit still, Kate’s method of accumulating knowledge about the industry is to get out there and savour all that’s new, fresh and fun.
Day-to-day, Kate runs The Cut London, a jewellery blog-cum-consultancy service, offering bewildered chaps advice and a helping hand in having the perfect engagement ring made by one of the industry’s many independent designers.
Beyond that, Kate is a designer herself and, teamed with her writing and understanding of design, this year has had her knowledge called upon by the likes of the Financial Times, Stylist magazine and the Evening Standard.
“The past 12 months have been an extremely busy time for me, as I’ve been juggling a new baby and trying to keep my business running seamlessly whilst chaos ensues behind closed doors,” she says with a smile. “I have managed to completely overhaul my website and now have dedicated galleries for my edit of London’s most exciting jewellery designers.”
The designers in question include the likes of Hannah Martin, Laura Gravestock and Jessica Poole, hinting at the type of jeweller among the coterie that Kate approaches for her bespoke engagement ring business. And it is serving her well, with turnover increasing 53% in 2013.
The service has opened new doors, and Kate was recently given the chance to flex her design muscles, while utilising her understanding of what brides and grooms want today. “I recently designed a jewellery range with a top London boutique which is really exciting,” she reveals. “I’m also expanding The Cut further into the insane world of weddings, but that’s all I can say about that for now.”
With baby and boyfriend by her side, Kate admits a certain fondness for escaping the city whenever she has the chance. “We head away in the campervan and sleep under the stars,” she says with a twinkle in her eye. “I love the peripatetic lifestyle — Ibiza is also one of my favourite places on earth with its sunsets, sandy beaches and swimming in the sea. I try and visit as often as possible.”
