Lee and Maureen Hooson have earned themselves coveted slots in this year’s Hot 100 for the second consecutive year — highlighting just how impressive their North-West retail venture, Mococo, really is.

Few jewellers beat the world’s biggest fashion brands to become the most prestigious store in a shopping district, but Mococo has done precisely that by snapping up a prime location on Chester’s Foregate Street.

The new flagship is the perfect environment for brands such as Pandora, Michael Kors, Olivia Burton, Uno de 50 and Daisy London. “Every time we open a Mococo store we have to do something that takes us to another level,” Maureen and Lee claim.

Mococo’s secret is not simply creating great stores in premier locations, they invest enormous time and energy into their staff. “Staff believe in the brands we stock, they love to tell the story of the pieces and the brand narrative comes naturally to them. Consistent training will ensure that all staff remain the very best ambassadors for all the brands we stock,” Maureen explains.

Mococo shows no sign of consolidating following its dramatic expansion, and an eighth store is already being planned for an opening within the next six months. The next generation of Hooson’s appears to have the drive, ambition and brains to eventually take over the family business. Second son Adam has just bagged a First class Master’s degree in Chemistry, and accepted a role in a global company straight from university. First-born Oliver has already joined Mococo where he is in charge of brand management and training.

Lee and Maureen both live and breathe the jewellery business at home and at work, but Lee does find time for his hobby collecting classic cars. Maureen says: “The British Racing Green Mini Cooper is part of Lee’s collection and is the most fun and cheeky car we have. “Our youngest son, Adam, drives this day-to-day and loves the way it has been restored to its former glory but given a real contemporary edge. I think the car is a little symbolic of us, we are fun and wanted to show that side of our personalities. There are a lot of old traditions in us, but we believe we are modern day thinkers which is the secret of our success.”
