HOT 100 2015 TRAILBLAZERS: James Courage

James Courage

It seemed only fitting that James Courage be named a Trailblazer in this year’s Professional Jeweller Hot 100.

His tenures at Platinum Guild International and the Responsible Jewellery Council may have come to an end in April and May 2015 respectively, but that certainly hasn’t stopped James from seeking to change the worldwide jewellery and precious metal industries for the better.

When asked to describe his greatest achievements over the last 12 months, James says: “Working with the board, executive committee and management of the RJC to build a stronger understanding and appreciation of the role of the RJC and to be part of a successful member-get-member drive, as well as being closely involved with the appointment of the executive director in London [Andrew Bone] and the first office head in India.”

As well as encouraging RJC members to collaborate and use their networks to welcome new businesses to the fold, James also encouraged active forums at international jewellery trade shows to build engagement. He continues: “The opening of the Indian office and the membership drive should help both overall membership growth and an increase of understanding of the RJC leading to increases in membership.”

During his time at Platinum Guild International, James conducted major consumer and trade research to facilitate greater insights into the opportunities for the precious metal in the Chinese market. Similar research also helped to launch a wedding-related segment for platinum in the Indian market.

Looking ahead, James will focus on consultancy work using his vast experience of the global jewellery market to help others. He is also a judge for the Jewellery News Asia Business Awards, which will be announced in September 2015. However, with one eye firmly on retirement, James is looking forward to spending time with his twin granddaughters and indulging in his hobby for sailing, which has seen him travel to the Caribbean and the Baltic in the last 12 months.
