On winning industry approval and the triumph of rose gold collections.

In a series of Q&As with the Professional Jeweller Hot 100 2013 NexGems, we find out what came next for this savvy set of designers since they were chosen as ones to watch in our annual jewellery industry celebration. We hear from Abigail Stradling, who says the Hot 100 has helped her to focus on developing stronger relationships with her retail partners.

Professional Jeweller: You were selected as a Professional Jeweller Hot 100 NexGem – what did this mean for your business?
Abigail Stradling: To be in the Hot 100 is definitely a career highlight thus far for me; it has raised my brand awareness, my profile as a maker and provided me with invaluable publicity. Crucially, it gave me renewed confidence to seek new matches with retailers and galleries. Ultimately, it was a timely boost, a sort of industry critique of ‘you’re on the right track’, and ‘now let’s see what you can do moving forward’.

PJ: Tell us about the time since you were given the Hot 100 accolade – your brand evolved?
AS: I was nominated by stockists of my jewellery and as a result it was clear to me that I should concentrate on strengthening relationships with existing retailers. Having a jewellery brand is so much more than just a great product; being able to provide the best level of service support to my retailers has become even more important to me. Now I have built upon these relationships, I’m ready to progress in other areas. I experienced increased confidence in my collections and further investment from stockists.

PJ: What can we expect next from the Abigail Stradling brand?
AS: I’m really excited to have the origins of a new range, focusing on the connection between glass and precious metal. It’s no further than embryo stage at present, but glimpsing what could result is thrilling. I’m also strengthening my core collections by expanding my rose gold range, which has been a real success since its launch last year, and creating even more wearable items such as tiny blown glass stud earrings. I will return to Art in Action this July, which is such an enjoyable show it feels like a holiday!
