Y ou have to take a chance, and sometimes a gamble, to be able to succeed,” say Jason and Jo Hughes. Indeed, they chose Las Vegas as their honeymoon destination and can see several parallels between the vibrant city and their own hectic – yet exciting – lives.
Nowadays, however, they tend to squeeze in the occasional mini break with their children, between the continual demands of business ownership. “Our lives are pretty full-on; as well as running the shop six days a week I do all the workshop runs for customers’ repairs and Jo does the accounts, while also making sure the customers receive first-class service!” says Jason.
But the hard work is paying off. Over the past three years the husband-and-wife team have seen their turnover and profitability increase dramatically. “We also joined the Company of Master Jewellers and I believe this has contributed to our success, as we have really concentrated on our brands and have first-hand experience of what seems to be working within the industry.”
As part of this new focus, Jason and Jo have added brands such as Clogau, Carat* London, Fiorelli and Bronzallure to their shelves, and continue to benefit from their investment in Gemvision four years ago.
“We are becoming more recognised for designing and making bespoke jewellery, and this has been a winner for us as customers are amazed by the concept!” Jason affirms. Looking ahead, the couple have many more plans in the pipeline for evolving the business. “We have decided to move forward with a refitted, new-look shop, which will create space for new brands and expansion of existing brands. We are already in discussions with two new exciting brands to launch later in the year, so watch this space!” Jo enthuses.
Soon, there will also be a major milestone to celebrate. “The shop has been in the town since 1918 and we are looking forward to celebrating 100 years in 2018!” Jason adds.
