Louise Gillespie honoured for costume jewellery biz Jessie’s Jewels.
A Liverpudlian jewellery entrepreneur has been named Merseyside’s Woman of the Year at an awards in the city.
Louise Gillespie scooped the overall honour at the annual awards ceremony last week for Jessie’s Jewels, a jewellery business she founded three years ago.
Jessie’s Jewels was born after Gillespie bought a necklace from a high street accessories retailer as a Christmas present for her daughter. It broke on Christmas Day and spurred Gillespie into creating a business to sell costume jewellery that was affordable and of quality.
She told local the Liverpool Daily Post: “I still cannot believe it. At the actual Women of the Year event I looked around and was just so honoured to be there among all these amazing women with amazing stories. I never thought I had a hope of taking the title.”
The winner was chosen via a public vote with the ceremony held at the Liverpool Crowne Plaza with a guestlist of more than 400 women from the region.
Gillespie, a practice manager at a law firm by day, wanted to provide her daughter with job while she studied for her A-Levels, as well as a better understanding of financial independence. She continues to work at the firm full-time, something the judges felt was especially impressive as the business has recorded notable growth.
Jessie’s Jewels has gone from being a seller at small events and at jewellery parties to having its collections sold through 30 concessions across Merseyside, with word spread about the business through social media.
