Welsh designer teams with retailer to create green amber design.
A certain TV Doctor has called upon the services of Welsh jewellery designer Kate Dumbleton to create a special green amber ring for his next television series.
Dumbleton was chosen to be part of the consultation and design process to make a ring for Peter Capaldi – the newly-inaugurated Dr Who leading the next series of the long-running hit BBC TV show, which returns to screen on August 23.
Dumbleton worked in conjunction with Penarth-based independent retailer Rowley’s the Jewellers, who were contacted in January 2014 by the BBC costume department.
Rowley’s head of bespoke jewellery Petra Aydin Barberini worked together with Dumbleton and Capaldi to design the ring.
Dumbleton said: "It was exciting to be involved with such a job. I was very pleased Peter liked my initial sketches and samples, one of which, a small band set with a garnet cabochon. [This] was picked out as the model for the size of stone, and our favourite choice – green amber – was selected for its lovely space-y feel.
"As part of the Doctor’s sleek new look, we knew the ring would have to be as unobtrusive and comfortable as possible so as not to interfere with all the action. I had to make it at lightning speed to fit the filming schedule."
The resulting ring is said to have met with the Doctor’s approval and, in a twist, both Rowley’s the Jewellers and Dr Who have recently celebrated their 50th anniversaries.
Dumbleton runs her own jewellery brand and provides consultancy for a number of leading jewellery brands, alongside special creations for the National Museum Wales.
