London jewellers looted as Tottenham riots spread

G Mantella & GL Jewellers hit as jewellers are looted and burned.

A number of jewellers have been caught up in the riots that have turned parts of north London into a war zone with gangs of youths battling against police.

Following the shooting of Mark Duggan violence broke out in the city’s Tottenham area that led to the burning of local buildings and vehicles and the looting of several retailers in the surrounding areas, including shopping hub Wood Green.

Witnesses report looters breaking into jewellery shops in Tottenham, Enfield and Wood Green. One jewellery shop in Tottenham was set on fire.

Family-run jewellers G Mantella on Green Lanes, which is a member of the National Association of Goldsmiths, was broken into and looted. The store had been pelted with rubble during the riots.

GL Jewellers, also on Green Lanes, was forced to close its doors after advice from police warning it of riots.

The riots have now moved down to Brixton where it is reported that many retailers have been looted with some buildings set on fire. As yet there are no reports of jewellers being damaged in the Brixton riots but riot police were spotted guarding a local pawnbrokers.
