Skillsmart Retail overseeing July 4 campaign to shop independent.

The National Association of Goldsmiths (NAG) has pledged to support a national campaign aimed at celebrating the UK’s independent retailers called Independents’ Day.

The day has been organised by Skillsmart Retail, the sector skills council for retail, which is encouraging retailers to get the public excited about their local independent retailers by asking them to buy at least one item from one of their local independent shops.

As a spin on the American holiday Independence Day – the event will take place on July 4.

The campaign is now in its second year and champions diversity on the high street while recognising the skills behind the shop front.

The NAG has said it is excited about supporting this day along with other trade associations including the British Independent Retailers Association (BIRA), Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) and Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (NIIRTA), as well as the My Shop is Your Shop, Indie Bound and Independent Retailer Month campaigns.

Independent retailers account for about 92% of all retail businesses in the UK and their importance has been highlighted in terms of the support they lend to local economies as well as their contribution to a location’s identity and community.

Retailers are being encouraged to download the campaign posters from the Indepdents’ Day website to help promote the day in-store. The campaign hopes to get independent retailers to join forces with other retailers and town centre teams to hold special events to really capture the public’s imagination.
