October hallmarking reveals annual increase of 7%

Figures show another strong month for gold and platinum assaying.

The latest hallmarking for the four UK assay offices as compiled by the Birmingham Assay Office show a positive upswing in figures compared to a year ago.

The stats for October reveal a 7% increase in hallmarking compared to October 2012, with the total number of items assayed hitting 1,145,605.

The BAO described October as "another strong month for gold", with the number articles hallmarked up 23% year-on-year, with platinum similarly showing an upswing with a 15.1% increase in hallmarking.

18ct gold hallmarking was up 19.9%, with 9ct gold also up, with an increase of 22.7%. Sterling silver was down 4.6%, and palladium 500 also showed a slide in assay figures, falling 49% compared to October 2012.

In total silver hallmarking was down 4.4% last month compared to October 2012, and there was a total fall of 9.1% for palladium hallmarking.

Overall 590,097 silver items were hallmarked last month, followed by 524,101 gold items and 24,226 platinum articles. Total palladium hallmarking for October stood at 7,181 items.
