EDITORS CHOICE... LOUIS VUITTON: Although a venerable fashion house, Louis Vuitton deserves to be looked at with fresh eyes thanks to its new enthusiasm for its watch line. No better proof is needed than that the brand exhibited at BaselWorld for the first time this year. Next year marks 10 years since the company unveiled its first collection of luxury watches, in which time it has created the Tambour, a watch icon of its own. While some of the rather sizeable designs on show during the watch fair appeared to be rather hastily arrived at ? the minute repeaters lacked the smooth timbre of a master makers touch ? many hinted at better things to come. It would be nice, for instance, to see the brand collaborate with some of its fashion design stable, such as Marc Jacobs, on high-end pieces in the way that John Galliano had such a strong hand in the creation of the Dior Christal. But the signs are good. As Hamdi Chatti, vice president of Louis Vuitton watches and jewellery, points out: It is the right time for Louis Vuitton. We want to reinforce our credibility as watch makers.
