Platinum and palladium assaying rebounds in May

Total hallmarking figures for May reveal 27.3% year-on-year increase.

The hallmarking figures for May 2014, as compiled by the Birmingham Assay Office, have outlined continued strength in the volume of articles being hallmarked, with 27.3% year-on-year growth.

The figures relate to the four UK Assay offices in London, Birmingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh. They show that, for the month of May, all precious metal categories increased, with ongoing strength in the performances for 9ct gold (up 31%) and sterling silver (up 24%).

18ct gold hallmarking was up 23.6%, while 22ct gold exhibited an annual climb of 45%, with 39,572 articles assayed.

May also showed an upswing in hallmarking for platinum group metals, with platinum assaying climbing 10.9% compared to May 2013, and palladium jumping 41%.

Last month, hallmarking figures exhibited a 20% increase compared to April 2013, with 9ct gold continuing to lead in terms of volume growth.
