Platinum and palladium shine in August hallmarking

Total hallmarking, silver and gold down but platinum and palladium up.

Figures from the four UK assay offices show that total hallmarking was down August with silver showing the biggest decline while platinum showed the biggest increase year on year.

The total number of items hallmarked in the UK in August fell 19% to 728,813 items. This is a steeper decline than the previous month when hallmarking showed an 11.9% dip.

The total number of gold items hallmarked fell 14.1% to 305,397 in August. It was 24ct gold that was hit hardest in the month with a decline of 63.2%, followed by 14ct gold, which was down 41%, 9ct down 17.2% and 18ct down 10.6%. The only category to show an increase in the number of items hallmarked was 22ct gold, which was up 19.8%.

Silver showed split fortunes for the month. While total items of silver hallmarked fell 23.8% to 395,091, Britannia silver showed an increase of 120.2% and 800-parts silver rocketed 26,300%. Fine silver was down 71.1% and sterling silver also took a nosedive with a decline of 23.8%.

Platinum enjoyed a strong month with the total number of items hallmarked up 12.6% to 20,198. The middle purities enjoyed growth with 950 parts up 12.5% and 900 parts up 1,233.3% while the polar ends of the scale experienced a dip with 999 parts down 90% and 850 parts down 100%.

Palldium also enjoyed a rise in August with the total number of items hallmarked up 7.7% to 8,127. Conversely to platinum, palladium showed weakness in the middle ground with 950 parts down 21% while 999 parts was up 100% in the month and 500 parts soared 536.9%.
