Police charge woman after Suffolk jewellery murder

Peter Avis was murdered in January above his shop in Bury St Edmunds.

A 27-year-old woman has been charged following the murder of Peter Avis, who was stabbed to death in his jewellery shop, Collins and Sons, in January.

Avis was killed during a voilent burglary at the store; the 66-year-old was found dead in the flat above his jewellery shop in Bury St Edmunds on January 13.

Suffolk Police have charged Aleksandra Karpiuk from Bury St Edmunds with conspiracy to commit a burglary at the address in Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmunds between 1 December 2011 and 13 January 2012.

Karpuik has been bailed to appear before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 9 May 2012.

After his death Avis’ family released a statement through Suffolk Police. It read: “Peter Avis was rather eccentric but a gentle, old-fashioned and private man. His life centred on his shop and flat. Due to this he was, perhaps, extremely vulnerable. We are all devastated by this sad news."

In January an 18-year-old man from Bury St Edmunds was been arrested on suspicion of murder and conspiracy to commit burglary, and a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary. Two men in their 30s were also arrested on suspicion of murder.
