Jewellery lifted from luxury hotel as guests attend Dante races.
All bets were off as tens of thousands of pounds worth of jewellery was stolen from racegoers rooms at the luxurious Middlethorpe Hotel last week, according to reports in local paper The Press.
The four victims of the theft, according to the paper, included Derby-winning trainer Paul Cole and racehorse owner Bernard Gover.
The jewellery theft occurred as guests were gathered for the Dante race meeting at York Racecourse, during a private dinner hosted on Wednesday evening by music magnate Chris Wright.
Middlethorpe Hotel manager Lionel Chatard was reportedly “devastated” by the theft, which was believed to have been committed by professional burglars. Items stolen from the four rooms included earrings, rings and wristwatches. Cash and other personal items were also taken.
Middlethorpe Hotel opened 26 years ago and is known for its prestigious clientele, among whom actor Russell Crowe, actress Gwyneth Paltrow and members of the Royal Family are claimed to be numbered.
