Wholesaler to praise innovative use of pearls in modern jewellery.

Raw Pearl has announced its sponsorship of a brand new category at the Goldsmiths Craft & Design Council (GC&DC) Awards in 2014, celebrating innovative use of pearls in jewellery design.

The wholesale pearl business is backing the Raw Pearls Special Award, encouraging designers to get creative with their use of pearls. It is asking entrants to showcase pearls in a modern style, while celebrating the gems "as a fashion relevant material". The winner will scoop a £1,000 prize.

Raw Pearls will officially open entries to the awards category at IJL in September, though the form is also available to download from the GC&DC website.

A statement from Raw Pearls said: "Dior and Chanel continue to use [pearls] in a relatively traditional format. What is now exciting is the vast array of colours, shapes and sizes available to be experimented with, and set in an unusual or contemporary fashion. The award hopes to encourage a new generation of designers to work with pearls in different ways."
