Signet boss talks of growth through acquisitions

Terry Burman will retire from Signet in January after a decade at the retailer.

Terry Burman says US arm could expand by acquiring another chain.

Signet chief executive Terry Burman has speculated that the jewellery retail group could expand through the acquisition of another chain in the US.

Burman said that Signet had tried to expand in the US by opening new stores but that this had proved too expensive. The jewellery boss said that Signet could buy a well-known US brand and combine it with some of its regional chains to build a second chain.

"We tried for about three years growing organically and we couldn’t do it; it’s going to have to be through an acquisition," said Burman at an industry conference.
