Silver and platinum hallmarking shine in July

White metals up 7.1% and 13.3% respectively at four UK Assay Offices.

The latest UK hallmarking figures compiled by the Birmingham Assay Office show a small increase in the number of articles marked in July, with 0.9% growth compared to July 2012’s figures.

In total 796,893 articles were hallmarked in the UK last month, compared to 789,771 marked in July last year.

White metals showed strength in July, with the number silver articles hallmarked showing "a promising increase" of 7.1% and platinum hallmarking up by 13.3%. However, the total number of gold articles was down 5.9% and palladium was down 20.9%.

Both 9ct and 18ct gold hallmarking exhibited a fall in the number of articles hallmarked while 22ct and 24ct gold showed increases, possibly due to fluctuation in the hallmarking of Asian gold jewellery.
