Sly lookalike jailed for Berker Bros raids

Criminal caught out after witnesses remembered his Hollywood looks.

A Londoner was convicted of robbing wedding ring specialists Berker Brothers after an eye witness described him as looking like Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone.

Stallone lookalike Mark Whelan stole more than £8,000-worth of jewellery from postal workers making deliveries for wholesale jewellery company Berker Brothers, based in the Stoke Newington area of London. Unfortunately for him, he caught the eye of the witness during his getaway because of his “swarthy looks”.

Whelan was convicted of two separate raids in 2008 and 2009 and sentenced to 11 years imprisonment. During his first attack Whelan temporarily blinded a postal worker and escaped with two bags of jewellery. For his second, he robbed a cash-in-transit worker and relived him of sacks of jewellery.

Whelan’s defence team claimed that after a serious injury that left him with a limp, Whelan had found himself out of work and was forced to turn to crime. He pleaded guilty to the two crimes of which he was convicted but was acquitted of a third.
